The Birdman's Wife by Melissa Ashley6/10/2023 With naturalists and explorers discovering new species of animal life in the new world, John Gould needed to venture from London and after meeting Charles Darwin, decided to launch his own expedition.Elizabeth wanted to accompany her husband to Australia but with four young children judged the journey too demanding for the whole family. She was an accomplished artist in her own right and her ambitious husband needed her at his side. The novel shows how this talented woman became much more than an appendage to her husband – though up until now that’s as much as history has given her credit for. His wife Elizabeth Gould worked as his artist, rendering new species in finely crafted detail in lithograph. It’s the story of a significant but little-known historical figure, a woman previously overshadowed by her better-known husband, John Gould, who was often known as Australia’s first ornithologist or the ‘Bird Man’.Around the time Charles Darwin was making earth-shattering discoveries, John Gould was working in his London studio, as a taxidermist and a curator at the London Zoological Society and becoming celebrated for his cataloging of new species, mainly birds. Why we love it: The Birdman’s Wife is as gorgeously rendered as some of the stunning lithographs by artist Elizabeth Gould.

There is no doubt that Gandhi was a highly moral person with a sincere dedication to achieve justice through non-violent means. Augustine, for example, Gandhi is aware that all of his stories and moral lessons will have a political impact on the reader. (Albert Schweitzer, for example, dismissed him as "naive".) STORY OF MY EXPERIMENTS WITH TRUTH is Gandhi's spiritual autobiography, yet unlike THE CONFESSIONS of St. It is hard to think of another major political figure of the twentieth century who was so widely venerated and ignored, sometimes at the same time, or else posthumously. There are statues of Gandhi from Central Park in New York to Havana. Ironically, and perhaps also inevitably, it was left up to American conservatives, from NATIONAL REVIEW to COMMENTARY magazines, to point out that the Gandhi up on the screen was not the real deal but the creation of a white British liberal, Richard Attenborough. When the movie GANDHI won the Academy Award for Best Picture back in the 1980s Hollywood liberals joked that it was because he represented everything everyone in Hollywood wanted to be: "thin, tanned, and moral". "If Gandhi had to face off against the French he would have gone to meet his god a long time ago".-Ho Chi Minh "Saints should always be presumed guilty until proven innocent."-George Orwell on Mahatma Gandhi

Generation x douglas coupland review6/9/2023 Mixing narrative text with pop-art-inspired illustrations, slogans and definitions, the novel depicts what it refers to as our “accelerated culture”. Neither is the novel just a snapshot of young people’s concerns and lives in the early 1990s. As he puts it, “X is a term that defines not a chronological age but a way of looking at the world”. But rather than referring to a cohort of people born between the mid-1960s and the early 1980s, for Coupland “X” identifies the refusal of “the merry-go-round of status, money, and social climbing that so often frames modern existence”. Published 30 years ago, Generation X went on to become a cult text and helped to popularise the term “X” for those born between the mid-1960s and the early-1980s.Ĭoupland struck a chord, as his characters’ disaffection, “ knee-jerk irony”, and withdrawal from society chimed with depictions of the young in the early 1990s in popular culture. This is the plot of Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture, the first novel by Canadian writer and artist Douglas Coupland. To survive, the three get McJobs – “low-pay, low-prestige, low-dignity, low-benefit, no-future jobs in the service sector” – only finding solace in each other’s company and storytelling. Dissatisfied with society’s structures and expectations, they move to the Californian desert looking for new beginnings and more meaningful lives. Andy, Dag and Claire are in their twenties.

A River of Royal Blood by Amanda Joy6/9/2023 Because despite the love she still has for her sister, Eva will have to choose: Isa's death or her own.Ī River of Royal Blood is an enthralling debut set in a lush, ancient North African inspired fantasy world that subtly but powerfully challenges our notions of power, history, and identity. As tensions escalate, Eva is forced to turn to a fey instructor of mythic proportions and a mysterious and handsome khimaer prince for help in growing her magick into something to fear. When Eva is attacked by an assassin just weeks before the battle with her sister, she discovers there is more to the attempt on her life than meets the eye-and it isn't just her sister who wants to see her dead. Living in Raina's long and dark shadow, Eva must now face her older sister, Isa, in a battle to the death if she hopes to ascend to the Ivory Throne-because in the Queendom of Myre only the strongest, most ruthless rulers survive. Sixteen-year-old Eva is a princess, born with the magick of blood and marrow-a dark and terrible magick that hasnt been seen for generations. Its last known practitioner was Queen Raina, who toppled the native khimaer royalty and massacred thousands, including her own sister, eight generations ago, thus beginning the Rival Heir tradition. Titan rockefeller review6/8/2023 Rockefeller lived a very disciplined life, and. But it was interesting because of the idea of trusts and how he used trusts and companies to achieve his goals, which is very important. Titan is a magnificent biography-balanced, revelatory, elegantly written. The book has influenced Tokans path in business too he liked Rockefellers attitude around money and family. So again, this is a little bit of a book review today on this book, Titan, all about John D. But he also uncovers the profound religiosity that drove him to give all I could his devotion to his father and the wry sense of humor that made him the country's most colorful codger. Drawing on unprecedented access to Rockefeller's private papers, Chernow reconstructs his subjects' troubled origins (his father was a swindler and a bigamist) and his single-minded pursuit of wealth. He was the terror of his competitors, the bogeyman of reformers, the delight of caricaturists-and an utter enigma. In the course of his nearly 98 years, Rockefeller was known as both a rapacious robber baron, whose Standard Oil Company rode roughshod over an industry, and a philanthropist who donated money lavishly to universities and medical centers.
